Overcoming obstacles

While Nisha Varma was already becoming a top designer in both residential and commercial space, COVID-19 has taken her company in a whole new direction by winning awards and gaining recognition. But what is most exciting is that she accomplished all of this while not letting her own disability define her.

Born with a hearing impairment that caused a permanent hearing loss in high-frequency sounds, Nisha struggled with consistently being told by doctors that she would be considered lucky to graduate from high school let alone even survive college. With a speech impediment due to the hearing impairment, the bullies in middle and high school mocked and judged her. “My confidence was challenged daily and on top of that, I was a ‘brown girl,’” Varma said. These challenges only inspired Varma to take the high road and she graduated from both high school and college with honors and went on to work in two major careers before becoming an interior designer.

Working as a marketing manager in one of the iconic design centers in the country, the New York Design Center, the work there piqued Varma’s interest in becoming an interior designer and she later became certified at New York University. Leaving her doctors dumbfounded by her continued achievements has only intrigued the success story of how Varma achieved her goal of owning and starting her own business and becoming a pioneer in her industry.

“It is said that when one of your five senses weaken, another one of the five strengthens. You can bet my vision and sense of smell are very heightened,” Varma said. “Visually I can see the potential of a space right away. I am able to seek out the finer goods in the market, and I see quality quicker than most.”

NV Luxe Interiors is built on inspiration by designs and efforts by Nisha Varma and the belief that anyone can overcome challenges and fulfill dreams. The fairly young company started in 2014 and has grown an exclusive client base in the New York, New Jersey, and Miami areas. Varma, having an innovative mind and business, focuses on luxury commercial and residential interior design and is expanding her business into designing Airbnbs and a boutique hotel.
